There should be a law forcing executive salaries to be within a certain percentage of the average pay of those beneath them, weighted by the number of employees beneath them. That way, to raise your own salary, you would have to find some way to optimize pay for those beneath you as well.

Ben & Jerry’s started with a 5 to 1 pay rate, the CEO’s pay could only be 5 times the pay of employees who made the least. They ran the business with increasing success for 16 years while keeping this rule. The only reason they changed is because their CEO retired and they had trouble finding a new CEO with that rule in place. They changed it to 7 to 1 in order to get a qualified person to accept the job and it was later phased out entirely

A business model that was working and benefiting thousands of employees was tossed out because most CEOs measure their worth by the size of the pay gap
