Every single person who complains about Giles Terera’s representation of Burr in comparison to Leslie Odom Jr can meet me in the pit
You can have preferences and whatever but you can do it without acting like the dude has no fucking talent when he’s stunning
This is true! Yes! He was the most different Burr I’ve ever seen and it /changed the play/ and it was FASCINATING. He was immensely talented and so impressive.
I think I prefer the other “style” of Burr, because of the story it makes (though that might not have been true with a different Hamilton actor!), but Terera was Doing Something and it was skilled and interesting and good. I can entirely see and fully believe there being people who far prefer the story told with his Burr, rather than Odom’s or Dixon’s.
But I walked out of that theatre SURE people were going to be butts about his performance, which is absurd because he was one of the most amazing things on stage.
See I love Giles’ representation because I nerded out when I heard the cast album and may or may not have downloaded Aaron Burr’s journal from when he was travelling Europe after he made the stupid-ass decision to shoot a man (I like the musical representation of Burr but you know, real dude committed a murder). Anyway, Giles Terera perfectly embodies the man who writes shit like this:
“Invited to supper but don’t want to go”
“london, february 1, 1812. have spent 14 shillings and 6 pence magnificently, i.e., like an ass”
(After losing his umbrella, this dramatic-ass bitch) “my umbrella hung heavy at my heart”; “and you know my umbrella is on a voyage”
He also set fire to himself at one point. Giles’ Burr has this beautiful sort of nerdy earnestness. I don’t think I prefer him to Leslie, Leslie’s Burr is a lot smoother, a lot more restrained, but Giles totally nailed the Burr I get a sense of from the journals and I really love that about his performance. But the second time I went I heard a girl behind me complaining about how he has a bit of a lisp and I’m like…yeah and he still articulated everything *perfectly* so why don’t you just wheesht.
