Today I encouraged my client to stab a pumpkin with pencils, hit said pumpkin with various blunt objects, and then hammer it repeatedly. So clearly, if I ever have children of my own, they will be sociopaths.

Norman Rockwell illustrated this cover of the Saturday Evening Post for the May 1, 1920 edition, featuring a couple getting cozy with a Ouijia Board. At a time when men and women needed to conduct themselves with decorum together, the Ouija Board gave them a chance to be quite close in a darkened space! One of my favorite podcasts 99% Invisible just did an episode on the Ouija Board. You can listen here (Via The Saturday Evening Post)

SMASH REBLOG
She doesn’t! Neither does your son! Or you for that matter! It’s pretty disheartening to see how many commenters don’t get this.
Holy shit yes. Agree. Thank you Girl Scouts.
Along with the Girl Scout Law, our 4th grade Junior troop has two rules:
1. Your body belongs to you
2. You are responsible for your own actionsWe have had rule #1 since they were in Kindergarten, and they know that it means you are not allowed to touch/grab/hug another troop member without permission. We have talked about non-verbal cues that it is okay to touch, such as holding your arms out for a hug being an invitation to be hugged. If the girls are being grabby with each other (they frequently climb all over each other like a litter of puppies), all I have to do is say “What is rule #1?” and they will all chorus “Your body belongs to you!” and stop touching each other.
We started rule #2 last year, and they know that it means if you break rule #1, that is a choice YOU have made, and is not the fault of the girl you touched/grabbed/hugged without permission; it is YOUR responsibility to not touch others without permission.
Rule #2 would also help kids understand that being touched or grabbed without permission is the other person’s fault, not theirs.

Hey, do you know that feeling of hitching up a long skirt so you don’t fall on your face when walking upstairs, and then you immediately become a wretched yet resolute Jane Austen character? It’s a universal thing, right?
It’s like resting a laundry basket against your hip and suddenly you’re a long-suffering peasant woman, wondering if you’ll survive the winter.
a shawl wrapped around the shoulders and you’re wandering the moors in a Brönte novel, feeling melancholic
Looking out the window at the rain and you’re a love-stricken newlywed wondering when your husband will return from the war.
Long skirt billowing behind you while to go down the stairs, you’re a proper Lady in a flowing ball gown being introduced at a fancy social function.
Hair blowing in the wind and suddenly you’re hovering on a cliff by the sea, staring out into the waves and praying your merchant husband will return from his voyage across the ocean
Hood up against the rain and wind and you’re a medieval abbess defying the weather and travelling on foot with your people to find a place to establish a new community.
Wiping your hands on your apron and you’re an 18th century kitchen girl rushing to let in the delivery boy you secretly love.
